Facebook saving our spit

In 2006, SOSA presented the then-largest petition to Qld Parliament opposing a ship terminal on The Spit or in the Broadwater. Ultimately 38000 people signed.
Now the enemy is a slightly different beast. In what could only be described as an ambush we have a Mayor announcing his support for a Cruise Terminal 2 days out from an election - an election he won with approx 37% of the vote.
Coupled with unprecedented pro editorial in the local papers, and political donations of over $300,000 [according to GCB 22-8-2012], Gold Coasters and the wider community are facing the very real threat of our Spit and Broadwater being destroyed by a failed idea backed by a handful of pro development business people.
The new trainer wheel councilors have sat on their hands whilst very significant items have been passed without some councilors actually attending. These items are aimed at fast tracking the Mayors Cruise Terminal aspirations.
Economically and environmentally it is a disaster, we know that and they know that - you can read about that all over this site.
Welcome Facebook - fortunately there is a generation of people that don't read newspapers. Rupert himself knew this only too well - with the purchase of Social Networking site MySapce.
Myspace was founded in 2003 and was acquired by News Corporation in July 2005 for $580 million. [wikipedia]
In April 2008, Myspace was overtaken by Facebook in the number of unique worldwide visitors.
Everyone is aware of the hype about Facebook. Poorly researched TV shock shows love to glamorise it - with either extreme success or privacy threat articles.
The adage if you didn't pay for the product you are the product is true with both Facebook and Google for that matter. They use your information to generate income from advertisers.
Facebook is ideal for a community to communicate swap ideas and connect. So if you have half a mind to join - that's all you need...
Save Our Spit take the security of a loyal followers seriously - follow good Facebook Account Security because by default the settings are very open.
A measure of how out of touch people can be is the spruiking of the Bolt Facebook page by the Mayor and the GCB - even the Cairns mayor commented on the obvious [they had 3000 likes].
According to the GCB report 24-8-2012 the page only had 147 likes.
This is at the time when Bolt himself was stating he wanted a 'holidaaaaay'.
Nothing personal - its just your ideas people don't like - listening is a very important skill ask Russ Hinze who famously took a 180 degree turn at a meeting with Currumbin locals.
Apparently in a desperate attempt to improve standing emails have been sent to all GCCC registered people to like the Bolt to the Beach FB campaign.
The save our spit Facebook page is a cracker - it makes for entertaining reading it what is the only forum where people can freely express their thoughts without an editor with a political agenda stopping them.
Pollies don't like it - a number have complained. A number of wannabe saboteurs have complained bitterly about not allowing their voice on the page.
Oh shucks - when you have a postage stamp sized understanding of the issues or are a developers well schooled [or not so well schooled] son we are happy to ban you.
Go create your own forum.
Facebook allows us technical types to analyse demographics - marvel at how one person connected to another person and to their friends has this amazing reach.
You can say anything [non defamatory and non rude four letter words] as plenty of kids are involved - you would be amazed at how inventive people can be.
We can assure you - it will be read by the very people who have decided that one standard pro-forma reply is needed for everyone querying council plans for a Cruise Terminal.
By having a forum with active engagement of people wanting to protect our Spit and Broadwater - the response rate can be surprisingly swift.
Recently we called for donations for our new FB style stickers and immediately people donated - and generously.
We run a tight ship [sorry wrong word] at SOSA - knowing that cashed up saboteurs will look at any opportunity to denigrate our org - unfortunately for them they will find we are just a bunch of surfers, divers, dog walkers etc who will stand up with the community to protect our open space from being handed to a developer on the whim of a politician a couple of months in the job.
Our page covers a blow by blow analysis of the constant political spin - you know the type aimed at making people think the issue is lost.
Numbers don't lie - we are fast approaching the numbers on our FB page and website where all stakeholders in a development need to be aware. We don't want a Cruise Terminal - especially one wrapped up in the ridiculous political spin.
