Protection for the Gold Coast Spit at last!
The Gold Coast community is jubilant at the decision by the Queensland Government on Friday 3rd August to protect The Spit, Marine Stadium, and adjacent reserves for the future enjoyment by residents and visitors.
The preservation of the northern end of the Spit for open space parkland and the release of Crown land south of Seaworld Nara for commercial and marine precincts meets both the requirements of the boating and tourism industries and the community's need for public open space.
Gecko - Gold Coast and Hinterland Environment Council spokesperson, Lois Levy, said "There has been an enormous community-wide effort to secure lasting protection for the Spit as a green space for the enjoyment of residents and visitors."
"This decision by the Beattie government to protect the Marine Stadium and park reserves to the north of Seaworld is a win-win situation that will fulfil what the community has been asking for over the last three years," said Ms Levy.
"Our main concern is that the public open space facilities will not be left in limbo should the commercial developments not proceed. There is already substantial lease money' coming from developments on The Spit which can be redirected to Doug Jennings Park and surrounds."
"We're looking forward to being pro-actively involved in the holistic planning for Doug Jennings Park, the Marine Stadium and other nearby reserves." said Ms Levy.
"We are pleased that the government has halted, once and for all, repeated attempts to convert this invaluable recreational area into yet another commercial precinct as there is already an ample supply of land south of Seaworld for development. We look forward to the formal gazettal process of the parklands." said Ms Levy.
"Gecko applauds this forward thinking decision."
