Developers on notice re Local Area Plan
Save Our Spit Alliance has come out today congratulating Premier Beattie and his Government for adopting the "No Development North of Nara" principle in the Governmentýs redefined Gold Coast Marine Development project."Mr Beattie describes this as a win-win for the community and development interests, and we agree with that view," said Steve Gration, SOSA President. "We can have it all. This is a triumph for Gold Coasters and The Spit and for SOSA - after over two years of fighting for this approach, we have won another big battle."
"This is all about preserving the areas north of Sea World like Marine Stadium and Doug Jennings Park for community uses now and into the future, and about allowing appropriate development south of Nara- to accurately reflect the very best of our Gold Coast - while protecting and preserving the vibe that is our Broadwater and the free natural environment feel of The Spit," said Kate Mathews Hunt, SOSA Rep.
So while SOSA is celebrating that the State Government has adopted its position, developers are being put on notice that the Local Area Plan for The Spit must be complied with. And that means NO high rises- nothing taller than Versace.
"It reflects what Gold Coasters expect to see on The Spit- and that means no development above 3 storeys and development that is in keeping with and which respects the natural lands and waterways paradise that is The Spit", said Steve Gration.
SOSA will keep a close eye on both the Government and developers in the interests of everyone on the Gold Coast and our tourists who love and enjoy the natural environment.
"We will see this through" said Kate Mathews Hunt. "And we urge fellow Gold Coasters to similarly keep their eye on the ball".
SOSA will also continue to work with environmental planners and other experts to advance proposals to improve and protect the lands north of Sea World, which will be available to developers and the government alike as community prototypes for The Spit community parklands and recreational environments.
"And we call again upon the Government to formally gazette and thereby protect all lands north of Sea World, to ensure that no further development threats can affect these community lands now or into the future," said Steve Gration.
