A supporters spit

It's one of those things that will never go away, I wish all those people that keep on pushing for this development would all crawl under a rock and die! I loathe you all.
How many times do you have to be told by the local people of the Gold Coast that we don't want this in our already choked Broadwater? It has failed Environmental Impact Studies in the past, and will in the future, but I guess a bit of corrupt money changing hands will always be able to erase those problems won't they?
The Spit is the last remaining marine reserve left undeveloped and we want it left this way, we already have 10 000+ restaurants to choose from, we don't need anymore, and the last thing I want is to be told is that I cannot paddle over and surf Straddie on certain times as big arsed ships are requiring unrestricted access to dock, but that's only one of my concerns.

I can see that it will bring in extra tourism dollars, but at the expense of our waterways, our marine life, our environment and our Broadwater, it is hardly worth the destruction compared to the benefits.
But these people that are pushing for it hardly care about that do they, it's all about money and greed.
Well I for one will be doing everything I can to block this and following a similar trend I did as a kid 20 years ago, ripping out all the surveying pegs and burning them over on TOS every weekend after a surf.
Humans are destroyers, plain and simple and these types of destroyers cannot rest unless they see grass and trees replaced by concrete.
They must cry when they see unspoilt beaches and pristine water, and families enjoying themselves without having to pay a entry fee.
Call me a hippy or a tree hugger, I don't give a shit! There is a thing called balance, and if you get it wrong, which you will, people such as myself will have to live with the consequences?

The waste from bilge pumps washing up on the beach, the potential of oil spills, heavy metals in the fish we catch and eat, the falling quality of our water and the restrictions placed on Gold Coast families on entering the proposed marina are only a few of the devastating side effects of this proposed marina. I would prefer to see the Spit with a cemetery built,  populated with the bodies of the people responsible for re-opening this destruction plan.
It is clearly for the rich and for the reason of greasing pockets and I can see the SOS alliance will have a constant battle with the issue of our spit and seaway threatened by destructive development and the greed that fuels it..
Looking over the plans, all I can see is family expense and revenue generation, The Underwater Aquarium will have an admission fee, The Waterfront movie theatre will have an admission fee, the marine docks will attract a fee, The new island with cabanas, day restaurants and shuttle service will cost you money, "Graveyard Island" with protected swimming area (just what we need, more nets) will charge an admission fee, the 400-500 marine docks will incur fees, all the while people have been enjoying this area of the Gold Coast for free and these rats want to change that.
All those people that flock to ýBums Bayý will be swimming in a cess pool, as they plan to build a large ýFlush Pipeý from there to the seaway so all the crap can be send back out to sea, then washed back up on our shores with the onshore sea breeze.

But to sugar coat it and make out they really give a shit about the general public they will put in some stairs for the divers, well I am a diver and navigating my way over the slippery rocks doesn't faze me, if anything, it adds to the experience and I am sure most divers would agree.
They plan to upgrade the vegetation and beachfront walking path north of sea world, well that has always been a little trick up their sleave, this area has been deliberately poisoned over the years, I personally caught someone in there spraying poison on trees and he said it was to kill mosquitoes, what a load of shit. This area was deliberately run down so that when the time came to announce a proposal such as this, people would do anything to see the beachside vegetation restored. Nice trick, but I can see through it.  Didn't any of you seem it was strange that on one side of the road everything was flourishing and green, but on the other dead and decaying?

We have a desalination plant that has proved to be a massive failure, not only did it cost countless millions of Gold Coast rate payers dollars to build, but has a ongoing cost of $23K per day and produces high levels of damaging greenhouse gases, as well as high concentrations of salt.  For the reason of trying to justify existence it continues to pump water into our dams which are currently full! the water grid manager said it will produce 44 million litres of water whether we need it or not? Even if it is going over the walls? That to me just plain stupid and a complete waste of tax payers money and unnecessary environmental damage but in the same breath, consistent with our Councils poor city management.
The people supporting this and the developers pushing for the Gold Coast Shipping Terminal are nothing short of greedy, money fueled environmental murderers!

Thanks for the article Ross - I am sure you are speaking for many on the Gold Coast and wider.
