The Spitfighters Newsletter

Dear Supporters,

All seems suspiciously quiet on the western front, so your SOSA Team are still working hard monitoring Government activity, enlisting new supporters and promoting the No Development North of Nara cause.

This includes:

1/ letters to the new Minister for State Development, John Mickell cc the Premier & Deputy Premier, seeking a meeting as soon as possible. We also request that any renewed Expressions of Interest process be for a marina sited south of Nara and remind them that the GCCC Vision 2020 says No Development North of Nara.

2/ asking when we all get to see the draft Environmental Impact Statement - it's 2 months + overdue... and we know DP Bligh relied upon it to stop the terminal on 21 August because she said so! Our scientific and other advisers await it with enormous interest.

In the meantime, one potential proponent spruiked a new plan publicly, which involves over 800 marina berths and dry storage in the Marine Stadium, private commercial development and... sorry, we forgot, a little swimming enclosure in one corner of MS for the great unwashed. See, they think of everything... Lucky us!

The Marine Stadium Help us prevent the government allowing greedy developers to take Marine Stadium "bums bay" from us!

Steve Gration SOSA President

Margaret Keech dines with SOSA
At the recent Gold Coast awards ceremony, where Steve Gration and Hanah Wayne were nominees, SOSA representatives* were delighted to meet Margaret Keech and husband who happily, were seated on our table. As the only Beattie Minister on the Coast, we enjoyed meeting her and found much in common. We hope to continue liaising with her to promote our community objectives and aspirations for The Spit.
*As is our usual practice, SOSA reps paid for their own seats from personal funds.

Anna Bligh says (21 August 2006)

"I would expect to see different options being put forward including the possibility of superyacht facilities in the marine stadium area but there are other possibilities that developers may bring forward for the location and we would consider all of them as part of the total package."

Bulletin attacks us yet again

Our pictures of the seaway

"..both divers and greenies insisted the Seaway was home to irreplaceable marine flora and fauna. Yet our photographs show little more than the odd rock"
Weekend Bulletin October 14-15 2006

Well here are our photographs of some stunning marine life in the Seaway.

Peter Low of Devocean Dive is furious about being quoted as being in favour of dredging and a Marina in the Marine Precinct.
