Development No: PN86409/01/DA6
Applicant: Dept of Transport - Maritime Simulator & Training Centre
Objection Period Closes 25 October 2007
The Department of Transport is pushing its application to develop the area adjacent to The Spit kiosk carparks into a "maritime simulator/ training centre" and related accomodation. This is totally against stated Government policy as to The Spit. Unbelievably, we have to say NO again, it seems.
This development proposal is basically a windowless box for pilots to practice bringing ships in via a computer simulator - on the eastern side of The Spit, in the midst of Federation Walk and a stone's throw from the beach. All in an area the Bligh Government has publicly promised to protect for the people.
NOW is the short window within which we can say NO.
We have organised two approaches to maximise the effect of that word as follows:
1. The Formal GCCC Process
Urgent- You MUST do this (please!) to arrive before 25 October.
Write to the GCCC to formally record your objection. If your time is short, it is sufficient to say something like:
"We object to this development on the basis that it is totally inappropriate for this area and contravenes the Local Area Plan as well as the State Government promises that there will be no commercial development north of SeaWorld. Save our Spit."
POST or DELIVER this so it arrives on or before 25 October to:
Chief Executive Officer, PO Box 5042, Gold Coast Mail centre, Qld 9729.
2. Send an email direct
An email with the text you see will automatically go to all Gold Coast Councillors and cc to the State Government.
The purpose behind this is to make all decision-makers aware of this ridiculous development application and to ensure that the State Government 'gets it' that such proposals for the northern Spit have been rejected once and for always by Gold Coasters. The application must be withdrawn if the Government is to follow its own policy on The Spit.
We have put the Minister of Transport on notice of this fact already.
PLEASE help us (yet again) to stand firm to protect The Spit. We always said we would need to 'see this through' and we hope you will help us to do that!
Very best wishes,
SOSA Team
