News Sea World Ferris Wheel FiascoYou may have thought things have gone suspiciously quiet for the past months - and you are right - but SOSA is still in there fighting the good fight!Since last we wrote, we have met with senior advisers of Anna Bligh and re-put the community position on why we need to save the lands/ waterways north of Sea World and what brilliant things could be done by our community and GCCC with a little money and political will. The redesign of Southport is perhaps a more structured version of what GCCC and the Government could do- if they want to get it right. BUT sorry to say, another big issue has arisen which potentially threatens everything we all stand for. And that is the Sea World Eye ferris wheel. Like most of us, many of you may not like the wheel because it is too high, too dominating and too visually ugly on The Spit. Or you might think it a bit of fun, but not on a 'forever' basis. The problem is, that before they even built it, Sea World applied to make the structure PERMANENT. Now whether or not you like ferris wheels... this sets a very very bad and dangerous precedent for height levels on The Spit. It is too high and in the WRONG PLACE. But needless to say, the developers will be cheering it on. Put simply, there will be virtually NO basis to object to a structure of similar height within Sea World.. and by extension, north, east and south ... if we allow GCCC to approve the Eye as a permanent structure on The Spit. So what Can We Do? Put in an objection- the period has closed (it seems to us it was all very quietly done) but a short letter or email to Ted Shepherd, Chair, GCCC Planning Committee might help. Try email. eshepherd@goldcoast.qld.gov.au All you have to say is something like... "DO NOT ALLOW THIS FERRIS WHEEL TO REMAIN ON THE SPIT. IT IS TOO LARGE, DOMINANT AND INFRINGES THE LOCAL AREA PLAN. IT ALSO SETS AN UNACCEPTABLE HEIGHT PRECEDENT FOR THE REST OF OUR SPIT. SAVE OUR SPIT. [SIGN NAME ADDRESS ETC] Thanks as ever... & please act now. It's all about saving our spit and we need you now as much as ever! SOSA Committee |
